about

TECHNICOLOR AMERICANA (2005)
After relocating to Austin, Texas, Russell recorded a bold album of richly penned songs that merged his distinctly soulful “Jazzicana" by addressing his deep respect for jazz, classic country and roots music.

Recorded in '04 -'05 and officially released during an appearance at the prestigious Newport Folk Festival, Salt was nominated for IMA "Album of the Year" in '06. This album ignited Russell's recognition as one the top-shelf, one-of-a-kind songwriters and guitarists in the country. Features the stellar steel guitar and Dobro playing of Danny Bennett and bassist extraordinaire, Tom Benton. A guest vocal appearance by Megan Melara fills out this genuinely talented cast of Austin based musicians.

What They're Saying:

“...a cross section of sounds and flavors throughout this delightful disc. Russell has a down earth emotive vocal style that is sincere and warm. He is first and foremost a storyteller, and a very talented one... the bottom line is this music works on you and gets you emotional.”
– Keith Hannaleck, Blues Matters (UK)

“A little taste of Americana, Salt is a poetic string of love and loss. With an ear for craftsmanship, this album successfully captures the roots-folk sound often lost in production.”
- Dan Cummings, Hyperactive Magazine

about

Woody Russell Austin, Texas

A guitar-centric alchemist offering a potent mix of swagger, swing & heart. A vivid lyricist possessing an agile baritone saturated with emotive grit. Songcraft distilled from the warmth of vinyl album era singer-songwriters & blue-jazz, artfully mining elements of dreamy post-punk. Add then a masterful guitarist - one whom Blues Revue aligned with the "fearlessness" of guitar legend, Jeff Beck. ... more
