about

LARGELY ACOUSTIC DEBUT DRAWS COMPARISONS TO VAN MORRISON (1996)
"As Simple As That" is Russell's 1996 debut release. It represents this particular trio's first recording effort as a cohesive band led by Woody. One reviewer compared the album to the work of an early Van Morrison. It was a substantial breakaway from Russell's previous work with rock bands and other various recording projects. On this debut album, tales of bittersweet relationships and reflections on times past are woven into a colorful collection of earthy songs. WR reveals his "cinematic" lyrical gift as scenes of rural Americana are played out to the sounds of a mostly acoustic setting with cello and oboe complementing a few tracks.

about

Woody Russell Austin, Texas

Songcraft distilled from the warmth of vinyl album era singer-songwriters & blue-jazz, artfully mining elements of dreamy post-punk. Add then a masterful guitarist - one whom Blues Revue aligned with the "fearlessness" of guitar legend, Jeff Beck. ... more
