This is all that I have I suggest that you take it It’s fragile and slightly valuable So please don’t break it It’s all that I have To my name When you came on the scene I had to Step up my game I’ll be your world on a string We keep it light like that This love is just a plaything We keep it light like that Light like that You go walking with me Through the park We’ll cozy up in a pedi-cab Back to the club when it gets dark Where the band is really cookin’ With a joyful sound Everything is right on Mother Earth tonight As she spins us ‘round and ‘round and ‘round I’ll be your world on a string We keep it light like that This love is just a plaything We keep it light like that Light like that This is all that I have I suggest that you take it It’s fragile and slightly valuable So please don’t break it

In The Open 03:51
Now hold on, man, don’t go rushing in to things That’s what I was telling myself Slow down, brother, heed your own warnings Seems you just can’t help yourself She was staring right through me with those chocolate drop eyes Peeling back the layers of my very thin disguise ‘til I was right where I needed to be In the open, in the open I got nothing left to hide behind I was building walls, locking doors and throwing away the keys Just like we all do But when she start coming ‘round, she said “You’d better find those keys Or you’ll never have me like you want to.” She was staring right through me with those chocolate drop eyes Peeling back the layers of my very thin disguise ‘til I was right where I needed to be In the open, in the open I got nothing left to hide behind

Well it’s good to be back Nearly ran this thing off track Good thing we ran it out of fuel Could’ve burned it all night And that would’ve been alright But this morning would feel three times as cruel So get that business out of here Got to keep my head clear, got things I need to do before daylight comes breaking through Sure, I feel a little square But I’m glad it went nowhere Though I’m having second thoughts, just looking at you Could it be this came to me in some kind of dream With the belly dancer and my favorite song How does it get so deadly serious I paint myself into a corner before too long How does it get so deadly serious When I’m just playing along Can’t say that I recall Much of anything at all Good thing we had the proper tools Such a mystery I’m either very lucky Or the new King of Fools So get that business out of here Do not look back, play it cool, we will sort it out later down by the pool The evidence is there No need to overshare I’m due for a spiritual renewal I paint myself into a corner Way too close for comfort

Genuine Good 05:17
I'm not holding out much hope for sleeping like a babe in arms tonight I'm not holding back any punches if the heartless want to pick a fight Oh, but I still need to believe Yes, I still need to believe In some kind of love that can bring a man down to one knee In a little genuine good I'm not holding out for compassion to put an end to greed behind locked doors I'm not clinging to some notion that love always prevails on the killing floors Oh, but I still need to believe Yes, I still need to believe In some kind of love that can bring a man down to one knee In a little genuine good It might be found in her tiny eyes It might be drifting in night time skies Might be hidden in a perfect mistake Might be inspired where the headwaters break Might be discovered in one more try Might only be heard in a baby's cry Might set free some kind of revolution Might give rise to a fair solution Well, it might be present in a lover's touch It might come to light in busting the corrupt Might surface a phoenix from ash and dust It might only survive as a matter of trust Oh, but I still need to believe Yes, I still need to believe In some kind of love that can bring a man down to one knee In a little genuine good

Near Miss 05:14
En route from LAX to the manicured lawns of Jester Ave. She thought how much he’d changed, that old friend, she’d just bumped in to He never seemed tall enough and his jokes were lame But now she must confess He was a cut above the clowns she meets on these business trips out west And did he really say, Katie, you could have had me for a song You could have had any one of us for a song With a downtown view, singing for you all night long But we ended up like this, a very near miss She pulls up the drive of that empty house, says “welcome home” to herself A note reads, “Please take the dog to the vet”; she throws her keys on the shelf She’s home alone, yet again, thinking back to that old flame Said he’s got a band in New York and they’re doing quite well Says he can’t complain But did he really say, Katie, you could have had me for a song Could have had any one of us for a song Marry for money, earn every penny, you joined the club, got to play along So we ended up like this, a very near miss Got the big house, the envy of a friend or two Married the self-made man, a real fairy tale come true But does she really want any of this? Confusion disrupts the bliss Take another shot at it or just write it off as another near miss

Steady On 04:10
If you want to keep your head, boy Best call it a day You hyped and you hustled ‘til your heart got in the way Now you plead with your guru But there is nothing he can do He said, “I am no fortune teller, but this is my advice to you” Steady on Go steady on Put that in your head Just like mama said before you’re too gone Steady on Go steady on Put that in your head Just like mama said Go steady on Steady on Got no new leads for you, brother Nobody’s calling for you Not that they don’t want to get down It’s just so tough getting through And it’s a beautiful morning When you weren’t looking it arrived Take a big hit of it, brother It’s not too late to feel alive Steady on Go steady on Put that in your head Just like mama said before you’re too gone Steady on Go steady on Put that in your head Just like mama said Go steady on Steady on

This thing is broken in need of serious repair I don't know where it's going, but I know it's taking us somewhere Can't see where it started, don't know where it ends Some only get a signal, did you get the message that it sends Did you get the message that it sends? It seems we have landed ourselves right in the belly of the beast It might be too late to admit that enough is as good Enough is as good Enough is as good as a feast I slept outside last night like I sometimes did as a child Tucked inside the universe right on the edge of the wild Where imagination still reigns supreme just by closing your eyes While ten miles up junk mail satellite trolls for believers Through ever shrinking skies It seems we have landed ourselves right in the belly of the beast It might be too late to admit that enough is as good Enough is as good Enough is as good as a feast

My heart, like a freighter loaded With regret heavy as iron ore And I, the good captain sinking With my ship just off your shore Your love, the tide that carried me A drowning man, but lucky, nonetheless… oh, yes Drifting in with all of my wreckage You pulled me from that mess So, I must owe you something As sure as tomorrow will bring a new sunrise in the east But I must owe you something Though, from any debt you say that I have been released Baby, let me owe you this much My very best at the very least Felt like the ice cream man, broke down in the heat All my cool and sweet fading fast You blew in like a coastal rain A blossom on my desolate past A song just needs someone to sing A prayer just needs someone to bless, oh yes Drifting in with all my wreckage You pulled me from that mess So, I must owe you something As sure as tomorrow will bring a new sunrise in the east But I must owe you something Though, from any debt you say that I have been released Baby, let me owe you this much My very best at the very least What I can offer won’t fit in a box It’s made of light and honesty Don’t turn away this gift given in kind, baby Please take it, the very best of me

Next Move 04:54
Here I stand, smack in the middle of my time Played a good hand, no compelling reason to look behind Some say I’m lucky, but I have paid on every debt Yes, I’d agree that I’m pretty lucky But I am also not through paying yet To make my next move, sometimes I’ve got to break it all down To make my next move, to build from whatever I’ve found To make my next move Got to get my head and heart all the way around my next move I mean business, that’s what I came here for I’ll keep knocking ‘til you open that door I pay it forward, my old school philosophy Like the song says, I once was blind but now I see To make my next move, sometimes I’ve got to break it all down To make my next move, build from whatever I’ve found To make my next move Got to get my head and heart all the way around my next move Some say I’m lucky, but I have paid on every debt Yes, I’d agree that I’m pretty lucky, but I am also not through paying yet

Blue-green marble floats in space A grain of sand drifts with celestial grace We cry, we bleed, we love and we hope But these matters of my heart can't be seen with a telescope Or under a microscope We just learn to cope But you should see it from here It's a beautiful thing, I've never looked at it this way before You should see it from here Yes, it's a beautiful thing, I've never looked at it this way before Just stop and take a moment Stop and take a moment You should see it from here Perspective is a fickle mate The change of heart follows the twist of fate I remind myself to look to the sky I remind myself there is a reason why And the heart is the house of infinite rooms The garden of all colors, of infinite blooms I can't hide in the guise of the misanthrope These matters of my heart can't be seen with a telescope Or under a microscope, we just learn to cope But you should see it from here It's a beautiful thing, I've never looked at it this way before You should see it from here Yes, it's a beautiful thing, I've never looked at it this way before Just stop and take a moment Stop and take a moment You should see it from here I know some days you don't feel like much Not much of anyone at all But from the point of view That there is only one of your You should really, you should really see it from here Stop and take a moment Stop and take a moment You should see it from here

Our show was leaving town You pulled up every stake I brought the big top down And prayed nothing serious would break Still you mended every tear And I threw the broken bits away From that moment right then and there I knew we were in for some delicious days We packed our memories south Down from hills of cedar and pine Your heartache never reached your mouth My fear never reached mine Belief drove that first stake deep Breaking new ground along the way We raised a roof over the things that we'd keep We now shine that spotlight on These delicious days

about

CLASSIC ADULT POP-ROCK (2013)
"Sophisticated arrangements and a very thoughtful, fresh approach."
- RootsTime

“[Delicious Days]…drips pure soul that I haven’t heard since the days of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Donny Hathaway. Yes, I just wrote that. I gave this album 5 stars, but to be honest, it deserves The Milky Way. This is the best album I’ve heard in 2013 and the competition isn’t even close.” - Doug Morrisey, Muzikreviews.com
_________________________________________________________

Russell is a self proclaimed "moving target" as an artist and Delicious Days is more proof of that label. He continues to defy categorization here, though with a defined trajectory toward classic adult pop-rock (ie: Steely Dan, Van Morrison, Michael McDonald, Billy Joel, etc.) as the prevailing tone on this album - perhaps more so than on any of his other releases. But again, he seamlessly integrates jazz, rock, funk and soul in to the mix.

"Delicious Days is the most ambitious album project I’ve done to date in terms of the complexity of the music, the scope of the band and the production. These songs, a balance of those that are funky and light with some that are reflective and thoughtful, are an amalgam that I strive to find in my songwriting. Collectively they resonate with a certain sense of romance, longing, searching and ultimately, gratitude. I suspect that this is music for people who’ve lived a little, you know, who have some personal history under their belt. These are the characters that inhabit Delicious Days."

Russell funded the release of Delicious Days, in part, through a successful campaign on the popular crowd-funding website, Kickstarter. Woody is also the recipient of the 2013 Bugle Boy Foundation’s Talent Trust Award which financially assists selected artists with the production/publicity of a new studio recording.

about

Woody Russell Austin, Texas

A guitar-centric alchemist offering a potent mix of swagger, swing & heart. A vivid lyricist possessing an agile baritone saturated with emotive grit. Songcraft distilled from the warmth of vinyl album era singer-songwriters & blue-jazz, artfully mining elements of dreamy post-punk. Add then a masterful guitarist - one whom Blues Revue aligned with the "fearlessness" of guitar legend, Jeff Beck. ... more
