Make It Tough On Me Lyrics and Music by Woody Russell (10/07) © 2007, Woody Russell, Cats Up The Street Music, ASCAP ______________________________________________________ I’ve got two strong arms A good bit of muscle in my back I’m quick on my feet My mind is sharp as a tack So go ahead and make it tough on me to win your love Make it tough on me to prove what I’m made of Make it tough on me Go ahead and make it tough on me I’m a full grown man I know how to stand my ground But, just for you, honey It might be fun to let you push me around So go ahead and make it tough on me to win your love Make it tough on me to prove what I’m made of Make it tough on me Go ahead and make it tough on me I have already been somebody’s stepping stone I’m not afraid of going it alone My friends say, “Man, she’ll just tear you up”, but my heart has a mind of its own So make it tough on me Go ahead and make it tough on me

The Right Side Of The Grass Lyrics and Music by Woody Russell © 2010, Woody Russell, Cats Up The Street Music, ASCAP ______________________________________________________ Sometimes I feel Like moaning and crying Sometimes I feel Like lying down and dying But I know this feeling Is going to pass If you ask me “How you doing, brother?” I’ll tell you I’m alright Still on the right side of the grass I’m alright, still on the upside of the grass I’m alright, still on the right side of the grass Too many times it feels Like nothing comes together Too many mornings greet me With the same old stormy weather If yesterday was just another Half empty glass I’ve got to put my feet back on the street And remind myself, I'm alright Still on the right side of the grass

The Things We Do Lyrics and Music by Woody Russell © 2002, Woody Russell, Cats Up The Street Music, ASCAP I’ve got an old friend He lives on West 64th He thinks he’s a cowboy Sleeps with one eye open out on the porch He says it’s heaven on earth with you living right next door But, he doesn’t have a clue He doesn’t know ‘bout the things that you and I do The things we do He doesn’t know how much I’m in love with you And the things we do So I gave him a call He thought I sounded insane And over a beer at his kitchen table I tried my very best to explain Just as I found the courage who should come knocking but you at the window pane He still doesn’t have a clue He doesn’t know ‘bout the things that you and I do The things we do He doesn’t know how much I’m in love with you And the things we do I know exactly what he sees in you I know he’s hoping that you love him, too I’ve just got to tell him the whole ugly truth ‘Bout those things that you and I Those things we do He doesn’t know how much I’m in love with you And the things we do

RHYTHM AND BLUES AND BEYOND FROM THE HEART OF TEXAS (2010)
The critics weighed in and agreed that Woody Russell’s 2010 release, Up Against It, is an exceptional album; proof positive that he is an artist to watch. A vibrant blues/soul outing that celebrates, aches, rocks and soothes, this recording highlights Russell’s musicianship as an “inventive”, “exemplary” guitarist, as well as, a vocalist and songwriter of the highest caliber. He shades a note and pours on the soul with the best of them.

After releasing Salt in 2005, WR took time to do some serious artistic soul-searching. With the birth of his daughter in '06, he also became a father; another big shift in his life. "I was burned out on writing the kinds of songs as I had been. I began to give voice to the blues, which was always a big inspiration. I needed a break to refocus. I had a pretty successful album out at the time and was getting some big gigs but I needed to re-evaluate where I was in my career as well as get used to the idea of being a father. Many things were changing on a personal level for me during those few years and it seemed a perfect time to write and record some original blues and soul songs."

What They're Saying:

"Woody Russell has crafted a lovely collection of original blues and soul music… appealing guitar tones; his crisp, inventive lines blend funk and blues with Jeff Beck’s fearlessness.” – Tom Hyslop, Blues Revue(Jan/Feb issue 2011)

"There's a fine legacy of Texas blues and Woody Russell is well up there alongside many of his heroes. His guitar playing on this album is excellent, his hard-edged vocal style is perfectly suited to his self-written songs and the whole thing has the feel of an album that is part of the man and not just a project… sounds like the work of a man whose life revolves around his music and he writes and plays well enough to put him well ahead of most of his peers." - Andy Snipper, Blues Matters (UK) (Feb/Mar 2011)

"Russell’s guitar work is exemplary and his vocals alternate between fiery and soulful… a strong composer with a unique perspective on the blues. If you like your blues with a touch of soul and rock, Up Against It will be a satisfying purchase." - Graham Clarke, Blues Bytes

"Kick ##$ blues from Texas!" – Weston Jarrett, Radio Submit

"…an excitingly fresh, diverse and dynamic approach to the blues. Pick up a copy and give it a spin...you'll be glad you did." - The Blues Hound, 90.1 FM KPFT Houston

"...a very good musician, an exceptional singer and let's not forget Woody’s songwriting that seals the deal for this total package artist." - John Vermilyea, The Blues Report

"Pure genius in the form of Texas blues." - Doug Morrisey, Muzik Reviews

A guitar-centric alchemist offering a potent mix of swagger, swing & heart. A vivid lyricist possessing an agile baritone saturated with emotive grit. Songcraft distilled from the warmth of vinyl album era singer-songwriters & blue-jazz, artfully mining elements of dreamy post-punk. Add then a masterful guitarist - one whom Blues Revue aligned with the "fearlessness" of guitar legend, Jeff Beck. ... more
