She thought how much he’d changed, that old friend, she’d just bumped in to
He never seemed tall enough and his jokes were lame
But now she must confess
He was a cut above the clowns she meets on these business trips out west

With a downtown view, singing for you all night long
But we ended up like this, a very near miss

She pulls up the drive of that empty house, says “welcome home” to herself
A note reads, “Please take the dog to the vet”; she throws her keys on the shelf
She’s home alone, yet again, thinking back to that old flame
Said he’s got a band in New York and they’re doing quite well
Says he can’t complain

But did he really say, Katie, you could have had me for a song
Could have had any one of us for a song
Marry for money, earn every penny, you joined the club, got to play along
So we ended up like this, a very near miss

Got the big house, the envy of a friend or two
Married the self-made man, a real fairy tale come true
But does she really want any of this?
Confusion disrupts the bliss
Take another shot at it or just write it off as another near miss
